A Sweet Lesson of Hope: Learning About Christmas Through Candy Cane Crafts

Children showing their Christmas crafts at Children of Faith in India

This week at Children of Faith, the sounds of laughter and creativity filled our home as the children gathered for a special Christmas craft activity. With paper, glue, foam cutouts and real candy canes, the children learned that even a small piece of candy can tell a beautiful story of faith, hope, and love.

As the children shaped and decorated their own candy cane crafts, we talked about the meaning behind this popular Christmas treat. At first glance, a candy cane may seem like just a sweet gift, but it carries deep Christian symbolism that makes it especially meaningful during the Christmas season.

When turned upside down, the candy cane forms the letter “J,” reminding us of Jesus, whose birth we celebrate at Christmas. When held the other way, it looks like a shepherd’s crook, pointing to Jesus as the Good Shepherd who cares for His people and gently leads them, just as a shepherd watches over his sheep.

The white color of the candy cane represents purity and the love of God, while the red stripes remind us of Christ’s sacrifice and the promise of salvation. Even the peppermint flavor has been shared as a symbol of the spices used in biblical times, connecting the candy cane to the story of faith passed down through generations.

The Candy Cane is very tasty and lasted a long time

Everyone enjoyed eating a candy cane at the end of the activity, and each child proudly held up their handmade Christmas craft—each one unique, just like them. More importantly, they carried with them a reminder that Christmas is about hope, kindness, and the assurance that they are deeply loved.

The Candy Cane is like a little shepard stick. I like the taste of mint. It gave freshness to my mouth
