Sam Tseng, and I met Rosie Thandu, co-founder of Children of Faith Missions, in May of 2024. As a family physician with over 20 years of experience, naturally, Sam asked her about the medical protocols in place for the 125 children home. Rosie responded that over the last twenty years, thankfully, they had not encountered any major medical issues but more recently had been feeling the need to strengthen their medical protocols. This exchange sparked a series of in-depth discussions with Rosie and Anand about medical protocols and ultimately led to our trip to India.
Establishing a Healthcare Framework
The objectives of the trip became clear as we prepared for the visit. COF wanted to establish stronger relationships with local Indian physicians to ensure consistent and ongoing care for the children. A priority was to document immunization records for children who lacked them and to secure a pediatrician for ongoing healthcare needs. Additionally, identifying a suitable nearby hospital for emergency medical care was essential. To attend to the various medical needs of growing children, other medical professionals would be needed such as a dentist and a nutritionist.

Dr. Murali, a pediatrician and neonatologist, expressed a strong interest in supporting the healthcare needs of COF children including helping to medically onboard new children to the orphanage and bringing a 12-member pediatric team that includes pediatricians, a gynecologist, and nutritionist to the orphanage for routine medical care and check ups. They will also be ensuring the children’s vaccinations are up-to-date.
Dr. Anil, a local dentist, can help assess dental needs and establish regular check-ups and teeth cleaning. Dr. Anil plans to provide dental preventative care educational training to COF children on how to properly floss and brush every morning and night.

Education and Empowerment
In addition to connecting with healthcare professionals, we focused on equipping COF staff and older children with basic health assessment skills. Sam taught them how to assess various measurements including height, weight, and temperature. Providing this foundational knowledge empowers them to monitor their health proactively and recognize early signs of medical concerns.

A Warm Welcome and Lasting Impact
Beyond our healthcare-focused initiatives, we had the privilege of engaging with the children and staff. We visited classrooms, where students eagerly participated in their English and algebra lessons. It was heartwarming to witness their enthusiasm for learning.
Looking Ahead
This trip was not only productive but also deeply rewarding. We are excited about the progress made and the relationships established with local medical professionals. Strengthening COF’s healthcare framework ensures that these children receive the medical attention they need.
What an honor it was to be invited on this journey by Rosie and Anand. We look forward to seeing the continued growth and positive impact of these initiatives in the years to come.

Your Support Makes our Work Possible!
Your donations to our general fund make our Home successful. Our sponsors help us feed and clothe the children and provide tuition for college students, but we rely on donations to our general fund for the unexpected things that come along like special medical needs, or broken plumbing. We couldn’t keep transforming the lives of young people in India without these additional donations, please help us however you can.
